Basketball Shooting Drills That Work at Home
This is a top drills guide to help you improve your game. Use the step-by-step sections below to build repeatable form, clean footwork, and game-speed confidence. Every drill can be done at home, which means more quality reps, faster growth, and better results when it is time to play.
- Pick 2 or 3 drills per session
- Set make goals instead of time
- Track results in a notes app
- Home hoop or driveway space
- 1 basketball and water
- Phone for quick video review
- 100 to 150 total makes
- Same form on every rep
- Finish with free throws
How Home Training Accelerates Shooting Gains
Small, frequent sessions build stronger habits than occasional long workouts. A driveway or patio session can deliver hundreds of quality reps in less time than a full gym trip. The goal is simple. Build a daily rhythm, keep mechanics honest, and track progress so confidence carries into practice and games.
- More touches each week with less travel time
- Immediate feedback with form cues and video on a phone
- Flexible sessions that fit before school or after homework
Foundation First. Form and Footwork
One-hand Form Shooting
Goal: Build a straight release and consistent arc from close range.
- Stand 3 to 6 feet from the hoop. Guide hand off the ball. Elbow under the ball.
- Shoot 5 sets of 10 makes. Focus on soft rim finishes and identical follow through.
- Add the guide hand lightly for 3 sets of 10 makes without pushing sideways.
Form to Footwork Progression
Goal: Connect upper body mechanics to clean lower body rhythm.
- Start stationary. Make 20 midrange shots from each wing and the top.
- Add a 1-2 step into the shot. Make 15 from each spot.
- Add a hop step for quicker alignment. Make 15 from each spot.
Game-speed Catch and Shoot Drills
Five-Spot Catch and Shoot
Goal: Build rhythm and conditioning from standard perimeter spots.
- Spots. Corner, wing, top, wing, corner.
- Volume. 5 makes per spot for 25 total. Two rounds for 50 makes.
- Tempo. Toss to self off a bounce or pass from a partner. Shot goes up within 2 seconds of catch.
Drive and Drift Partner Series
Goal: Rep real kickout footwork from drift and lift lanes.
- Partner drives from the wing while shooter drifts to the corner. 12 makes.
- Repeat on the other side. 12 makes.
- Lift action. Shooter lifts from the corner to the slot as the partner drives baseline. 12 makes.
Off-the-Dribble Shooting
One-Dribble Pull-up Right and Left
Goal: Stop on balance and keep the release identical to catch and shoot.
- From each wing and top. Rip, one dribble, plant, rise. 10 makes each direction per spot.
- Emphasis. Shoulders square on the rise, eyes on the front of rim, land in the same footprint.
Change-of-pace Combo
Goal: Add pace change before the pull-up to mimic defenders.
- Pattern. Slow to fast burst, one dribble, pull-up. 8 makes per spot on both sides.
- Progression. Add a behind-the-back or between-the-legs escape. 8 makes per spot.
Finishing the Session. Free Throws and Pressure
Free Throw Ladder
Goal: Lock in routine and breathing when tired.
- Make 5. If a miss occurs, restart the set. Two total sets to finish.
- Record makes and total attempts in a notes app or notebook.
Pressure Countdown
Goal: Simulate end-of-game focus.
- Pick a spot. Make 3 in a row. Move to the next spot. If a miss occurs, return to the previous spot.
- Complete the arc around the perimeter. Stop the clock and log the time for future sessions.
Simple Weekly Shooting Plan at Home
- Monday and Thursday: Form work, five-spot catch and shoot, free throw ladder
- Tuesday: Off-the-dribble series, pressure countdown
- Saturday: Mixed workout. 100 total makes from varied spots plus 20 free throws
- Daily micro-session: 10 minutes of one-hand form shooting before dinner or after homework
Consistency beats intensity. Short, repeatable blocks deliver better results than occasional marathon workouts. A quality home hoop creates friction-free access to reps and becomes a reliable training space for the entire household.
Tracking Progress and Building Confidence
Measurement keeps motivation high. A simple chart of makes and attempts per drill reveals improvement and points out focus areas. Video clips captured from a phone help confirm elbow position, guide hand control, and balance at pickup and landing. Confidence rises when proof of progress is visible on paper and on screen.
Why a Home Hoop Multiplies Development
- Immediate access to quality reps creates more touches per week
- Family schedule is less of a barrier to practice time
- Weather windows can be used on short notice for quick sessions
- Training space doubles for footwork, ball handling, and conditioning
An in-ground system with a tempered glass backboard, solid anchor, and adjustable height adds long-term value. Durable components protect the investment through Wisconsin weather while keeping rebound quality consistent.
