Q&A with Kevin Murphy: Insights from a Team Sales Representative.

Back in March of 2021, Employee Bios were created with a list of short questions to give a little insight into the lives of our Team Salesmen. Unfortunately, none of these blog posts ever saw the light of day, but we have decided to change that! For our first Employee Bio we have Kevin Murphy! Enjoy our full interview with Kevin below!

1. Your original Employee Bio you have some rocking hair going on. What happened to the hair and how does the hat contain the flow?

Honestly that flow needs a revival, I just don’t know that I have the same drive at 34 to manifest it, that I had at 29/30. The hat did what it could, but it fights an easier battle these days.

2. This original Employee Bio was done 4 years ago now. Going on to year 9 of Team Sales and Captain of Team Morale, what have you learned in that time? Are there any big changes you’d like to share from then to now?

I’ve learned a ton over that time, but I’ve mostly learned how delicate the business is. Customers are constantly looking for what company is going to best serve them & their needs, and it’s incredibly important to take great care of each customer. We have to be the ones that go above & beyond from a service standpoint.
Still working on making that Captain of Team Morale title official, but I’m less qualified these days.

Kevin did technically lose out on the Captain of Team Morale title to Greg Fohey late in 2024

3. In your original bio as well you said that you came to work at Burghardt’s because you heard about the culture, and that’s a big reason you’ve stayed as well. Can you describe the Burghardt culture and what this place means to you now after almost a full decade of working here?

I had always heard that the culture at Burghardt was like a family working toward a common goal. While the family has expanded and is bigger than it ever has been, I’ve always found that to be true.

4. Is your favorite sports moment still either David Freese’s walk off in 2011 or the Blues winning their first Stanley Cup?

100%...you can throw the Bucks winning a title in there…that was probably the most fun I’ve had with any individual playoff run.

5. You said you wished that Burghardt’s carried Patagonia. Has there been any other brand at Burghardt’s that has filled this Patagonia sized hole in your heart?

In terms of really high quality brands, there have been a few that give me Patagonia type hope: Legends, UNRL, Cutter & Buck specifically, are very high quality brands we’re starting to pivot more into.

6. Looking forward, what are some things that excite you about the future of Burghardt Sporting Goods?

The reality that we’re capable of so much more. We are the best in the industry because of the people in this building, and if we continue that way, we can’t lose.

7. I saw that you played baseball in college? Did you enjoy your experience of being a collegiate athlete and how do you think that has helped you today?

Loved playing baseball in college. Taught me how to live on my own, manage my own schedule, work within a team & lead. I wished we had won more games and my ERA had been lower, but it was sweet.

8. Unfortunately, the only game I could find from your college career was your 0-6 loss to DeSales University, where you pitched all 6 innings and faced 33 batters. Do you have any comments about this performance 10 years later?

I’m going to blame my middle infield, and the fact that it was way colder than it should have been in San Antonio that afternoon. DeSales (PA) could also stick it.

9. Hold on I found a game where you pitched 7 innings with a 2.57 ERA and still lost against Olivet Nazarene? Can you tell us more about this?

A Cardinal Stritch tale as old as time brother. I’m highly upset you didn’t pull my 12-inning shutout in your research.

10. What’s the best piece of advice you can give anyone going into collegiate sports?

Have fun, AND take it seriously. Absolute potential to be the best time of your life. Meet a lot of people, volunteer, and get involved as much as you can.

11. Thanks for taking the time to answer! Is there anything else you’d like to say about yourself to all the BSG Blog readers?
