What Gear Does a Wrestler Need?

WIAA wrestling practice opens November 16. Here is what your wrestler needs to own by then.

Quick answer: A wrestler needs wrestling shoes, ear guards, a mouthguard if there are braces, and a competition uniform the school issues. Under the NFHS wrestling rules the ear guards have to be rigid and padded, with an adjustable locking device so they cannot come off. Rule 4-2-6 requires a tooth and mouth protector for any wrestler in braces or an orthodontic device, and a state association may make one required equipment for everybody. The legal uniform is either a one-piece singlet worn with full-length tights, or a two-piece of close-fitting shorts and a fitted top. Knee pads, a gear bag, and spare laces are optional. For the 2026-27 season the WIAA sets the first practice date at Monday, November 16, 2026, with competition no earlier than Friday, November 27, 2026. Burghardt Sporting Goods, 15333 W National Avenue, New Berlin, WI 53151, (262) 790-1170, carries wrestling footwear, ear guards, knee pads, mouthguards, and singlets, open Mon–Fri 9 AM–9 PM, Sat 9 AM–7 PM, Sun 10 AM–6 PM.

What does a wrestler need to own before the first practice?

The list is short. Most of what a wrestler wears is on the body, which is part of why this is one of the cheaper high school sports to get into.

  • Wrestling shoes, which are soft soled, cut high over the ankle, and worn on the mat only.
  • Ear guards, sometimes called headgear, for competition.
  • A mouthguard, required by rule if the wrestler has braces or any orthodontic device.
  • Practice clothes a coach approves, usually a fitted shirt and compression shorts.
  • A bag that holds all of it, because none of it should live in a locker.

The competition uniform usually comes from the school rather than the family. The WIAA calls for a school-issued uniform and applies a clean uniform rule to it, so a program orders those together. If you are the one placing that order, we wrote the process out in how to order custom basketball and wrestling uniforms.

What are the rules on wrestling ear guards?

The NFHS wrestling rules require ear guards in competition. They have to be rigid and padded, they cannot create a hazard for the opponent, and they need an adjustable locking device that keeps them from coming off during a match. That last part is the one parents miss. A strap that has stretched out over two seasons will slide, and an official can hold up a match over it.

Practice is a separate question. The rule covers competition, and your coach sets the practice policy. Most wrestling rooms want ear guards on from the first week, since cauliflower ear comes from ordinary mat friction and not from match intensity.

Is a singlet still required, or can a wrestler wear a two-piece?

Both are legal under the NFHS rules. One option is a one-piece singlet cut no lower than the level of the armpits, worn with full-length tights and stirrups. The other is a two-piece of close-fitting shorts without pockets, buttons, or snaps, worn with a fitted top. Girls competing at USA Wrestling folkstyle events are directed to a women's cut singlet, and a two-piece is allowed there as well.

Undergarments have their own line in the rulebook. Anything extending past the one-piece inseam has to be tight fitting, a single solid color, and unadorned, and it cannot extend below the knee. Programs order the singlets and warm-ups as a set so the whole roster matches.

Does a wrestler need a mouthguard?

If there are braces or any orthodontic device, yes. NFHS rule 4-2-6 requires a tooth and mouth protector that covers the teeth and the device. The rule asks for a properly fitted protector and bars attachments that serve no protective purpose or that create a choking risk. The same rule lets a state association go further and make a mouthguard required equipment for every wrestler, so check what your association has adopted before you decide it is optional.

Fit matters more than people expect in this sport. A boil-and-bite guard that slips loose gets chewed, spat out, and lost inside two weeks.

What changed in the NFHS wrestling rules for 2026-27?

Two of this year's changes touch the weight management program. The minimum body fat floor for female wrestlers moved from 12 percent to 19 percent, with the figure for males unchanged at 7 percent. A wrestler who tests below the floor needs a medical release from a healthcare professional before competing. Hydration testing, with a specific gravity no higher than 1.025, now has to happen immediately before the body fat assessment, and the plan is meant to include a locally developed nutrition component.

Rule 4-2-6, the braces and mouthguard rule above, was also rewritten this cycle. Weigh-in timing changed as well: weigh-ins happen at the start of a dual meet, or at a team's first competition on each day of a multiple-dual event.

Weight class decisions belong to the coach, the athlete, and a healthcare professional working from the program's weight management plan. Nothing here is a plan for losing weight.

When does the Wisconsin wrestling season start?

For 2026-27 the WIAA sets the earliest practice date at Monday, November 16, 2026. Competition cannot begin before Friday, November 27, 2026. The season runs through the State Team Tournament, which finishes Saturday, March 6, 2027. Growth allowance is tied to March 1 and to the regional and sectional tournament dates, so a wrestler's certified weight is not a fixed number for four months.

Coaches enter every official weigh-in weight into the state weight management program after each competition, and that data has to be complete before the next weigh-in form can be created. That is a coaching chore rather than a parent one, but it explains why weigh-in paperwork moves fast.

What do the skin check rules mean for my wrestler?

Wisconsin treats skin conditions as an eligibility question, not a cosmetic one. Covering a communicable skin condition does not make a wrestler eligible to compete, and trying to conceal one is handled as unsportsmanlike conduct, which can cost the wrestler the day or more and can bring discipline on the coach. Eligibility runs through a physician's release form, and a meet physician on site can override the diagnosis on that form.

What that means at home is simple. A new spot gets looked at the day it shows up, not the night before a tournament.

Where can you buy wrestling gear near Milwaukee?

Burghardt Sporting Goods has been outfitting Wisconsin athletes from New Berlin since 1881, and we work with hundreds of teams across the state. Our wrestling department carries footwear, ear guards, knee pads, mouthguards, singlets, and mat tape, and our in-house shop handles screen printing, embroidery, sublimation, and heat press for program apparel. Trying a shoe on in the store beats guessing a size online, especially for a first-year wrestler who has never worn one.

Frequently asked questions

Do wrestlers still have to wear a singlet?

No. The NFHS rules allow a two-piece uniform of close-fitting shorts and a fitted top alongside the traditional one-piece singlet worn with full-length tights. Shorts cannot be excessively baggy and cannot have pockets, buttons, or snaps. Which one your wrestler competes in comes down to what the school issued, since the WIAA calls for a school-issued uniform.

Are ear guards required at practice too?

The NFHS requirement applies to competition. Practice policy belongs to the coach, and most wrestling rooms want them on from day one. Cauliflower ear develops from repeated friction in ordinary drilling, so the practice room is where most of the exposure happens.

How should wrestling shoes fit?

Close. A wrestling shoe works as a second skin on the mat, so a loose one rolls under the ankle and bunches on a shot. Fit it with whatever sock the wrestler actually competes in, which is often a thin one or none at all. Buying a size up for next season defeats the shoe, and the laces have to be secured anyway, so a lace cover or tape is worth having in the bag.

What kind of mouthguard works with braces?

One made for orthodontics, which covers the teeth and the appliance rather than molding tight to the brackets. NFHS 4-2-6 requires the protector to cover both areas and bars any attachment that serves no protective purpose or creates a health or choking risk. Ask your orthodontist whether they want a custom guard made, since some do.

What changed for girls wrestling in 2026-27?

The minimum body fat floor in the NFHS weight management program went from 12 percent to 19 percent for female wrestlers. The figure for males stays at 7 percent. The stated reason is a safer margin for a high school girl pursuing a lower weight class. A wrestler who tests below the floor needs a medical release from a healthcare professional before competing.

Does Burghardt carry wrestling gear in store?

Yes. Footwear, ear guards, knee pads, mouthguards, singlets, mat tape, and coaching aids are in the wrestling department at 15333 W National Avenue in New Berlin. Program apparel is decorated in house. Call (262) 790-1170 if you want to know whether a specific size is on the floor before you drive over.

Uniform, ear guard, and mouthguard requirements come from the NFHS wrestling rules, including rule 4-2-6 and the 2026-27 rules changes published by the NFHS. Weight management figures and the hydration standard come from NFHS rules 1-5-1 and 1-5-2 as amended for 2026-27. Season dates, the clean uniform rule, the weight management entry requirement, and the skin condition language come from the WIAA wrestling season regulations for 2026-27. Lace and women's cut singlet requirements come from USA Wrestling folkstyle event rules; club and tournament rules vary, so read the event's own rules before the first tournament.
